    Last Post
I know this is a bit anti-climactic, as I'm not exactly the most consistent poster (**mild understatent**)...but this is it, guys. Starting tomorrow, I will no longer be posting or checking LJs. It's been fun -- there's just a lot to do, and not enough time to do it. To all of those people whose LJs I've been checking/commenting on -- I definitely still want to keep in touch with you guys! Hopefully quitting LJ will inspire me to actually see more of you in person, before I (probably) leave Boston in July.

    EFG, over and out.

    Magic: The Gospel
So, last night I dreamed that I was playing Magic: The Gathering. This in itself is a bit strange, as the last time I played Magic (aside from one game six months ago) was when I was fifteen. Playing with me was my sister, and a middle-aged bearded postdoc at my lab. And the best part? One of the cards was "Jesus."

Apparently, when you play Him, He starts out on earth, and each turn He ascends one step higher. The game ends when He reaches heaven, though who wins was left a bit unclear -- as it was the Jesus card, I'm guessing it would be something like "Everybody wins! Peace on Earth! The Kraken will lie with the Pixies!"

The wonderful [info]gelishan, who I just saw this past weekend, reminded me of the awesomeness of http://www.jonathancoulton.com/songs.

He's incredibly geeky, and his songs are actually pretty catchy. What could be better? My current favorite is "Skullcrusher Mountain." Go listen. Now. Or I will eat your brains*

Also, go vote. It's not too late, if you're on the west coast.

[edit 9:16 p.m.] Ironically enough, the LJ client mislabeled the time of my post, so it looked like I posted the entry at 2:00 a.m. tomorrow...

*listening and having your brains eaten not the only two options. Some may not listen and keep their brains. Prices and participation may vary. This message brought to you by Mike Davidson, (c) 2006.

    My weekend
...was actually wonderful. The bulk of it was spent going contra-dancing with [info]cornflake62 in New Hampshire, which was incredible. The dancing was of course a lot of fun, and I met a whole bunch of new quirky/crazy people. It was also really good to see [info]cornflake62 -- it had been months since we had seen each other. That definitely should not happen.

Perhaps more details later -- must get dinner now.

Guess how I'm meeting my friend Alison in NYC...
I'm taking a train. The "A" train, in fact. And yes, it is in fact the quickest way to get to Harlem.

If you guys haven't heard it yet, check out "Mandolin Moon" by Sister Hazel. It just makes me really happy.

Speaking of things that make me happy -- I just finished my last medical school application! I'm free! Well, until my first interview...er, which is next week...okay, maybe not quite so free. Still, tonight, it feels pretty awesome.

Also, Sister Hazel fans are called "Hazelnuts."

According to the teach-yourself language course I borrowed from the library:

[Instructor]: "She asks, 'Are you American?'"

(pause for me to attempt to translate the phrase)

[Instructor]: "He says, 'Yes, I'm American'"

    (pause)

[Instructor]: "She says, 'give me ten dollars, please'"

    (pause)

[Instructor]: "He says, 'I don't have any dollars.'"

    (pause}

[Instructor]: "She asks, 'you don't have any dollars?'"

    (pause)

[Instructor]: "She says, 'You're not American.'"

    Sweeney Todd
I just watched Sweeney Todd at a party hosted by Tova and Lynn -- 'twas great fun. While I was watching, I remember thinking that Sweeney Todd's entire killing spree could have been avoided if Anthony had just lasted longer in bed.

Look at the sequence of events:

    1) Judge Turpin decides to get a shave, at the exact same moment that Anthony and Joanna begin to make love (Ladies in their Sensitivities/Quartet)

    2) Judge Turpin arrives at the barber shop, where he is seen immediately by Sweeney Todd. (Pretty Women).

    3) Anthony arrives breathless at Sweeney Todd's barbershop and interrupts the barbarous session.

Apparently he's not much for cuddlng...

    On Relative Perception
My alarm went off at 7:00 a.m., which did not make for a Happy Edward (c 2003-2006). As my CD blared, I remember thinking, "wow, I don't remember that song being quite so fast."

I got up, went for a run with some friends, had some coffee, had lunch, and took a nap. I then put on the same CD that I was woken up by (yeah, I ended with a preposition. Bite me). The same exact song sounded positively sluggish. It's as if my brain perceived time on a "seconds/functional brain units" scale.

On my way home, I was stuck at a traffic light behind three large vans. I wasn't able to see anything directly ahead of me, but I had a clear view of the electrical wires that circle Cambridge like a big spiderweb. As I was absently looking at those wires, I noticed that there was a weird blue light reflecting off of them. The light was flickering at regular intervals, almost like it was coming from a siren -- which, as it turned out, it was. There had been a three-car pile-up in the right-hand lane of the road, and an officer was on the scene sorting out the details. I had been thinking about switching into that lane (as I had to make a right-hand turn three blocks later); I saw that flickering blue light, and I stayed in my lane. Because of this, I saved myself a good -- well, probably about thirty seconds. Not such a huge accomplishment, actually. But it's the principle, damnit. Shut up.
